Levels Description in Performance Evaluation
- To help parents and students assessing progress;
- to motivate and inspire;
- to guide them as "what's next"; but not for ranking, nor grading students.
Work Habit Evaluation:Available at the end of Fall and Spring Term. There won't be a report in the Winter term, except those the first time participants, as well as those whom instructors deem to require special attention and concerns.
Level P: Exploratory. Beginner level. Show some understanding in the topics, and learning in progress. Level 1: Demonstrate memorization of semantics and apply a single level of abstraction, and control structure. Level 2: Demonstrate memorization of semantics and apply two levels of abstraction, and control structures. Perform mathematical application, if applicabl. Level 3: Demonstrate ability to analyze and apply two and more levels of abstraction, and control structure. Can do well to finish projects but with considerable amount of guidance. Perform mathematical application, if applicable.
Level 4: Can handle multiple levels of abstraction, new data and structure design with minimal guidance. Ability to perform math application, and/or physics concepts if applicable. Level 5: Self-learner, self-driven, and demonstrate self-guided level of resourcefulness. Able to design with minimal guidance. Demonstrate the ability to research on new topics and extend projects with minimum guidance.
Level P: Exploratory. Learning functionalities of basic components, and various gears. Must need step-by-step instructions. Level 1: Recognizing functionalities of basic components. Be able to apply and visualize building steps based on simple contraptions. May still need step-by-step instructions. Level 2: Be able to apply functionalities of basic components and come up with workable design without step-by-step instructions.
Level 3: Demonstrate ability in creating workable sound structure and design on his/her own. Level 4: Demonstrate L3 skill, as well as modeling skill. Level 5: Demonstrate L4 skill, and ability to instruct others.
Algorithms in C/C++ Track - Level B to IV : Click here to read about the detailed expectation and syllabus. All levels suffixed with "-P" indicates "in-Progress" to achieve that level. Progression to the next level means one demonstrates satisfactory level of understanding in current level.
Level 1: Student joined this the first time and demonstrated a good learning effort. He/she will continue to collect higher skills set. May participate in this competition next year. Level 2: Good Effort. Student has provided valuable contribution as either major or supporting role to the team. He will continue to collect higher skills set. May participate in this competition next year.
Level 3: Great Effort. Student has played major role in the team, and made valuable contribution to the team. He/she will continue improving higher skills set. May participate in this competition or possibly upper level next year. Level 4: Excellent Effort. Has taken the major role of the team. He/she has demonstrated as a leader in both social and technical aspect for the team. Move onto to competition with more advanced level next year.

About Level and Group Assignment
Group Assignment: It is based on students’ work habit, in-class performance, and interests. It is at their best benefit to fit in a class where they feel comfortable to be challenged and advance at their pace. Especially for the younger ones, it is far more important to keep them engaged and interested. The learning curve is usually much steeper for Grade 4 to 6 and beginning of Grade 7.
Not confined in the same class: Once students are assigned to a class, it does not mean they must be confined in that session if they demonstrate way beyond the average of the class. We would love to advance students, but try to avoid a situation where we have to move them down a level. Do review the Roadmap for clarification.
Intrinsic motivation: Due to the fact that this is an extra-curricular program, we must carefully moderate work load in order to both increase intrinsic motivation and excel their technical skills. Extrinsic influence, such as purely just pressure will not be effective. Goal is to enhance the students to appreciate "self-responsibility"; in other words, it is not parents' job to keep reminding them. They should always refer to their Engineering Journal for reminder and review.
